This act bolstered the company’s reputation and kept them going through the Chicago Fire 1871 and the 1906 earthquake and fire in San Francisco so that 200 years later we’re still talking about The Hartford Insurance as a leader in the industry.

The Hartford Car Insurance would come some time later, of course, as the company itself predated the consumer automobile. During their heyday as health and life insurance providers, they actually signed a policy with Babe Ruth to cover him in case he ever became too ill to play and lost income as a result.

The most recent development at the company was the purchase of CNA Financial’s Groups Benefit Division in Chicago, Illinois in 2004. Today, the company still remains headquartered in Hartford, Connecticut at 1 Hartford Plaza.
